Hogan’s Heroes for Jell-O
May 8th, 2012

I don’t even quite know what to say about this. It’s vaguely reminiscent of the Star Wars Christmas Special. But creepier.

    Bob Crane, Jello and Whipped Cream, a.k.a., about 10:15PM, before the real fun begins. But Dawson is awesome, and Carol Channing nails the line on her intro.

    When I was little I knew this kid named Eugene who’s mom wouldn’t let him watch Hogan’s Heroes. She had been some kind of refugee and said the Nazi’s and prison camps were not something to joke about.

    We thought that was ridiculous, and I’m pretty sure we beat Eugene up because of it.

    Kinch is the glue that holds this together. Take him out and it’s just plain silly.

    @Galley Friend TR,

    I have sympathy for Eugene’s mother. The horrors of National Socialism are difficult for me to find humor in.

    On the other hand, IMDB reports that Robert Clary, who played Cpl. Louis LeBeau, was in a German concentration camp during WWII. It’s my understanding that the Nazis tattoed a number on his arm, as they did to all Jews in such camps.

    If he thought it was worth acting in, then it may well be beyond my criticism, one way or the other.

    There were plans during the Bewitched/Brady Bunch era reboots to do a Hogan’s Heroes movie with either Russell Crowe (http://movies.ign.com/articles/317/317322p1.html) or Mel Gibson (pre-meltdown) as Hogan.

    The best reaction I saw was John Stewart’s “This is for those who felt Schindler’s List failed to convey the zany nuttiness that was Nazi Germany.”
