An Individual Mandate Conservatives Can Get Behind
July 2nd, 2012

Santino is being very, very naughty.

My only tweak here would be that in order for a gun mandate to be effective, you’d want most laws to be concealed-carry, as opposed to open-carry, since you want to create strategic ambiguity as a deterrent to would-be lawbreakers. A gun mandate under an open-carry regime would probably just cost-shift the problem.

Actually, I’m hoping you’ll conclude your natalism book with a call to bring back the Lex Julia. Many of the key provisions are already structured as penaltiestaxes so that should pass muster with Justice Roberts. It’s not a celibacy penalty, it’s a celibacy tax!

I believe everyone has a natural human right to a nice rec vehicle or at least a spiffier crossover, and to receive one from the car lessor exchange of his or her own choosing. How about a phased-in annual penalty of like $5 on me–I mean, on those people, out there. Failing to drive something above that minimum requirement
