There’s a mole. And it’s way. Down. Deep.

Noah Shachtman has a truly fantastic piece on the 2001 anthrax mailings in the latest Wired. I can’t say enough about it. Just go print and enjoy. Amazing reporting; clear writing. A total triumph.

There is one aspect of this case that has always led me to believe Ivins was the guy: One of the letters was mailed from a mailbox right next to a KKG house at Princeton. This, along with all the other circumstantial evidence (the lack of an alibi, the hours in the lab, the RMR 1029 misdirection, etc…) clearly indicate Ivins was involved. And of course, the suicide.
It’s still a tragic case. I can’t help but believe Ivins never meant to hurt anyone. He’s always struck me as a Robert Hanssen type. Someone who was simply so smart, and frustrated that colleagues may not have appreciated his genius, that he did something truly terrible just to prove how much smarter he was than everyone else.

Someone needs to make this into a movie.
