I caught five minutes of PBS’s old warhorse Antiques Roadshow this weekend and saw something fantastic–a set of the original art used for Christmas cards put out by Cape Canaveral–before the town had formally found its identity as the Kennedy Space Center. You can see the full set here, but this will give you a flavor of the awesome:
It’s pretty wonderful and I’d love to get a print. The only problem is that it’s not clear if the art is by “Donald Mackey,” as the Antiques Roadshow people say, or by this “Donald Mackay.”

Yes the art is by Donald Mackey. The Antique Roadshow appraiser told me that it was Donald Mackay. His obituary I believe was spelled Mackay as well. But all art is signed Donald J. Mackey. Maybe the Antique Roadshow should re evaluate these. If you would like to see my collection you can. Find them in photobucket under Don Mackey. Thanks!

I worked at the Kennedy Space Center from 1974 to 1979 and rode to work with Don Mackey for several of those years. He gave me a set of his Christmas cards and even signed an 8.5×11 inch copy of his “Seasons Greetings from the Indian River Queen” showing a houseboat, a rocket launch, a flying saucer & green aliens playing cards with Santa Claus on the roof of the houseboat, and with a tiny self portrait of the artist painting the launch from the porch of the houseboat. Very nice guy. Had lots of stories.
