I saw David Brooks at a commencement last month for a graduate in the family. After the obligatory lame social-science jokes he shifted abruptly to spirituality–with surprising power, relating the biography of Dorothy Day (before several thousand people with no idea who she was, I guarantee it, faculty/administrators included). Great stuff within an otherwise stiff and boilerplate ceremony, and it completely overshadowed the visiting mining executive who was being picketed by about 3 or 4 of the students
