I’m mostly amazed at how perfectly it knocks off every aspect of the oeuvre of America’s premier auteur. The over-saturated magic hour lighting, the military porn, the brash young man getting talking down from the hardass late middle-aged officer, the clumsy and superfluous love interest subplot, the whirring giant robot sound effects —- I can’t think of a single thing that’s missing. Thank goodness for the idea/expression dichotomy or they’d be facing a serious IP suit.
