Comic Books as IP Loss-Leaders
February 19th, 2013

Galley Friend A.K. sends along this very interesting analysis which pegs total sales of comic books/graphic novels for 2012 at roughly $700 million.

To put that in some perspective, in 2012 The Avengers grossed $623 million domestically.

In a weird way, I suspect this makes the actual comic-book industry more vital and secure today than it was 20 years ago when it was breaking sales records.

JVL’s writings on demography remind me of Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi telling his dad, “But you’ll die!” JVL is saying that without more babies, America will lose its position of power.

But as Anakin replied, “Nothing can stop that now.”

I see that the author touches on this fact, because it was my first thought too when I heard the $715M annual sales figures in the comic book industry: How much of that is solely related to the “The Walking Dead?”

The first two or three TPBs of the series remain constants in the Top 10 for trade sales monthly and with the television series going strong, that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.
