Even though it’s a February release, sign me up. Now.

Prediction: This movie will gross over a billion and be the surprise movie of the decade, spawning dozens of copycat movies. Critics will ignore it, as will the academy. But not Americans, we’ve been begging for this movie for about 10 years.

Chris,
Did you like “Courageous”? I was impressed by an interview* I listened to with the guys from Sherwood Pictures, which grew out of their church ministry:

*I should note the interview was on Christian talk radio, the Protestant station, which I flip to when the Catholic station is running commercials or has a lame show on. I’m very ecumenical about my Christian talk radio!

Herzog…loved Courageous. Saw it twice actually (once with my wife and once with our small group from church). Not sure if you are familiar with the other films from Sherwood pics (I think this is the 4th one they have done), but it is the best acted one they have done. Remember, this is a CHURCH making this movie…Having said that, the message of the film hit me between the eyes…twice. If you have kids it is a must see. My favorite line of the movie is spoken by a cop and goes something like this “Half of the problems we deal with on the streets wouldn’t even exist if fathers did their jobs at home…”. Too true.

I’ve now watched the trailer about 10 times. This

If there were any justice in this world, I would owe someone $10 for watching this trailer. Over and over.
-
So I just watched this, because earlier at work I couldn’t watch (my computer has a problem with Flash at work and I’m not sure I want them to fix it…I mean I already goof off enough without the Flash).
Now, like SkinsFan, I need to watch another 10 times. On first viewing, I particularly loved the scene with the Seal underwater ready to catch the bad guy after he is taken out by a different Seal sniper, presumably so the dead body doesn’t make a splash. I saw that and I needed a new pair of underwear…

Oh wow
-
Kathryn Bigelow is sweating this, I’m sure of it

FH: my favorite part of the trailer is the part where a SEAL slides into position to fire. That move couldn’t be choreographed by anyone other than a real SEAL. There is no actor or stunt double who could pull that move off. The entire thing seems so much more realistic because it’s choreographed by real SEALs and acted by real SEALs.
-
I could do without the MTV beach party and Snow Patrol montageism but that’s not critical. More interesting to me is the Youtube sniping about whether or not current SEALs should ever become involved with such “showboating” (as it’s being called)
-
[…] Jonathan Last, this is as close as most of America will ever get to watching real SEALs in action. How do I know? […]

SIGN ME UP ALSO!
GREAT POST – AS ALWAYS!!Steve

When I was stationed at Fort Hood, 2001 to 2005, I saw a British training video on how to survive if you find yourself in the middle of a minefield. It was informative but struck me as rather arty. It had a flashback-within-flashback structure: classroom training was shot in grainy black-and-white with a stationary camera, the actual minefield incident was in color with a shaky camera, the debriefing was also in color, but with smooth tracking shots. Enough money was spent on special effects so that when the panicky soldier blew himself up, it was quite gory. I even recognized one of the cast, Matthew Pidgeon, David Mamet’s brother-in-law.

Saw the trailer twice before the movie Courageous…agree that it will be a HUGE hit, ignored by the critics, etc, etc..
Interesting that I saw the trailer before the movie Courageous, which is another one of those films that Hollywood has no idea what to do with…a Christian film, made for less than $2m that has grossed over $18m so far and is actually GAINING momentum…if Courageous was about a couple of asian, lesbian community activists fighting against big corporations all we’d hear about is HOW TIMELY AND GROUND-BREAKING it was…
