The New Atlantis deployed its latest issue yesterday and it is awesome. Nick Eberstadt, Alan Jacobs, Bill McClay levels of awesome. And those are just the headlines. The undercard is crazy good in its own right.
If I could only subscribe to three magazine, The New Atlantis would be the first on my list. And if you aren’t already subscribing, you should be. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure.

Here’s the thing — they make all of their content available online for free so why should I subscribe?! I used to get City Journal in the mail (which I think is one of the best conservative “magazines” in the business and looks great on glossy paper) and then I noticed that if I just was patient they made all their articles available for free online. I don’t understand why they would do this as a business model — it gives me no incentive to subscribe. The fact that I can only get certain content from The Weekly Standard and Commentary and The Claremont Review of Books as a subscriber is why those are my three conservative magazines of choice.
That said, you are right that The New Atlantis is pure awesome (Algis Valiunas does a lot of writing for Commentary and I always like his stuff). If I couldn’t get their stuff for free online and could subscribe to one more magazine, it would be a tough call between The New Atlantis, City Journal (again, assuming I couldn’t read everything for free online), and First Things(which I still love and I think Rusty Reno has really stepped up and attracted good talent). Man, if I had to pick between those three, the choice would be tough…

Thanks for the tip. I read two pieces and am hooked.
Similar to FH, I’ll suppport a good book but I’d rather read it on Kindle and they make PDFs available — gold invitations to theft. I was thinking of a donation in the amount of a subscription but wondered if there were other advantages.
Anyhow, thanks. Buffy and The New Atlantis — I’m in your debt!
