Next week, American Idol‘s stunningly talented host Ryan Seacrest will be getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame–something Mel Gibson, Robert Redford, and Clint Eastwood have yet to accomplish. You see, it’s one thing to direct Academy Award-winning films and deliver memorable performances, but have these guys ever tried interviewing a singer who just got harangued by Simon?
(How would you feel if you were Billy Joel or Kevin Kline, upon learning that you would be getting a star on the Walk of Fame this year, then learning who else was getting one?)

Ryan Seacrest, I believe that is the color my wife picked to paint the downstairs bathroom. I recall buying two gallons of it at Lowe’s last week.

It says here that they choose 20-24 honorees a year out of 200-300 applications. I’d love to know who they rejected in favor of Seacrest.

This goes squarely in the “Who Gives a Shit” column. The only thing that being recognized popularly this way means is that you appeal to the lowest common denominator. But then again isn’t that the American way?

I agree that a star on the Walk of Fame is a bit much, but I have to come to Ryan’s defense here. He is such the favorite whipping boy for so many that criticism of him is often unthinking and rote. IMO he is very good at what he does. He’s articulate, he’s personable, and he’s professional. Seems to me those are necessary qualities for an emcee. Cut the guy some slack.
