John Hinderaker has some of the smartest analysis I’ve seen on the Judith Miller-Scooter Libby situation. His very plausible theory: Miller used Libby as cover to get a deal with the Feds concerning another, more important investigation, where she also might have some exposure.

Normally, I get no pleasure out of seeing the Eagles beat either Dick Vermeil or Herm Edwards, both of whom are great guys who bleed green. But yesterday’s gutsy comeback win was sweet. You can’t spot a team like the Chiefs 17 points, on the road, and win. Just can’t do it.
In other, semi-related news, my heart goes out to Hugh Hewitt and other Tribe fans. In my experience, Indians and Cardinals fans are pretty much the best in baseball–smart, genteel, passionate. It’s a shame this very nice and very young Cleveland team couldn’t hold it together down the stretch.
But Indians fans: Courage! This is a young club and the important thing is that the organization has rebounded. In modern baseball, small-market teams are supposed to diminish into .400 ball once the core of players from their last generation pass on. This Indians team defied that logic. It couldn’t happen to a better city.

Early on I was hard on Patterico, but he’s proved me wrong time and time again: He’s clearly one of the best bloggers out there. I’d go so far as to say that he should be a model for what bloggers should aspire to. And now he comes out with this bit of sense.

Can you believe this man wants to remain chancellor? At an SPD rally some weeks ago, a student reminded me never to underestimate Gerhard Schröder. And he was right. Just last June, the chancellor and his Social Democrats were polling around 25 percent. But in less than four months, he turned the tables on the opposition, went on the offensive, pummeled Angela Merkel in a televised debate, and increased his support by almost 10 percentage points. His coalition doesn’t have enough seats in the Bundestag to rule. But neither do the Christian Democrats, who are now talking about a compromise. They want to form a Grand Coalition with the SPD. Schröder says he is willing to join them. On one condition: That he be chancellor.
Ugh.
