Galley Friend Ramesh Ponnuru did me a solid this morning a month ago, when I was otherwise indisposed.

Even so, Awesome Level: High.

…love Chuck’s, shall we say, “muted” reaction to RP’s shout out. Joe Sixpack, as my southern friends say, Ramesh Ponnuru shits bigger than you. (As Paul Reiser once said to Michael Biehn)…no offense.

WSJ failed to include in your article the part about the 77,000,000 missing from our population (55 millon abortions over 40 yrs and the 22 million likely progeny of those females over 18 yrs.

    Hi Mr. Last,
I haven’t read your book yet, but I have read and enjoyed many of your articles including the latest in the WSJ. I wanted to ask a question about a graph in your article: Why is 2.1 the replacement rate? Where does that number come from? Would the replacement rate change over time and place, given differences in childhood mortality? Also, aren’t female children more important than male children in terms of population changes over time? Thanks for your time.

OK, if wikipedia is to be believed then I think I can cancel my questions above.

(Replacement rate fertility does depend on time / place. I suspect it has changed in the U.S. over the past 150 years, so the straight horizontal line in the graph in the WSJ article may be inaccurate, in that sense. The male-female ratio is close to 1 so we don’t even need to worry about male babies versus female babies.)
