Two tent-pole trailers yesterday, for Cowboys and Aliens and Green Lantern. Have a gander.
I’m surprised at how much I like the look and feel of Cowboys and Aliens–as a rule, I don’t much cotton to genre mixing. But this seems pretty intriguing. Plus, how could we have waited for almost 50 years without putting Harrison Ford in a Western? With his voice, he’ll be $$$.
Green Lantern is another exercise in genre mash-up (superhero and sci-fi), which is probably why I never much cared for the character. And the movie looks terrible. Like a transparent rip-off of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man. Look! Hal Jordan is a cad! And charming! And he’s got this neat new power! Plus–aliens!
Pass.

Harrison Ford starred in 1979’s The Frisco Kid, fresh off the first Star Wars film. It was a bad Western, but still a Western. And according to the IMDB he was also in episodes of Gunsmoke, Kung Fu, and The Virginian.
At least he doesn’t look like he’s sleepwalking in this one. When was the last time you could say that?

The Green Hornet trailer is a lot more entertaining than the Green Lantern trailer. It looks like the whole movie is going to be about something I vaguely remember from when I was six: the Green Hornet’s sidekick Cato was awesome. It was only many years later that I learned Cato was played by Bruce Lee.

Attempts to blend westerns with science fiction or fantasy elements usually result in films that are close to unwatchable (Wild Wild West, Jonah Hex). (are there examples where it has worked that I’m forgetting?) I like Ford and Daniel Craig, but I’m skeptical … I’ll want to see if it’s a fresh tomato before I spend $12.
