Pursuant to this post, where I wondered why it is that American liberals seem so eager to embrace the idea of Muslim politicians, Galley Friend X has a theory:
I increasingly think the Democrat/Muslim union has to do with old-fashioned relativism. Democrats don’t actually believe that women’s rights and gay rights apply to everyone; white people: sure. Arabs? Well, who am I to judge? And Muslims know this.
When Robby George is just dumbfounded as to why all these Muslims support the party of abortion on demand and gay marriage, the answer seems pretty clear to me: They’re supporting the party of abortion on demand and gay marriage for infidels. In Dearborn, it doesn’t matter one whit what Tony Kennedy says about the Sweet Mystery of Life. Ms. DeBoer has the right to get married to another woman; but if Fatimah thinks she does, too, then her cousin Ahmed will disabuse her of that idea very quickly.

I think the issue is more that they see Muslims as a new potential mascot group that they can champion and therefore obtain that cheap sense of moral superiority that comes with riding in like a white knight. I think a lot of liberal attitudes towards minorities aren’t actually based on the good of the minorities, but how good it makes the liberals feel to champion them. Muslims are (as of now) a tiny, insignificant minority. They’re mostly kinda swarthy, so the “it’s racism” meme is easily transferable, and a significant chunk of liberals loathe Christianity (without actually knowing much about it), so Islam looks respectable by comparison (à la Judaism or with the exotic frisson that’s made lobotomized Buddhism so trendy). It’s telling that people who talk about the American Taliban and Christianism aren’t often all that upset about the actual Taliban or Islamism—which suggests that they’re viewing everything through the lens of their immediate experience and values—one of the most important of which is proving that they are of the superior class of Caring® and Smart® people who should be given power on that basis and disagreement with whom is prima facie evidence of evil and stupidity which latae sententiae excommunicates you from the circle of decency and human worth. You think otherwise; your argument is invalid, QED. So the whole “Let’s not be beastly to the Muslims” is just another stick to hit the people they actually, vehemently hate: white Christian Republicans, like the folks back home in Terre Haute (I’M TALKING TO YOU UNCLE PHIL! DIDN’T YOU SEE STEPHEN COLBERT DISEMBOWEL THAT GUY?!)
That’s my suspicion anyway.

It is very simple. Liberals hate, hate, hate conservatives and Christians more than any foreign enemy. Embracing Muslims – who also hate conservatives and Christians – pokes a finger in the eye of their most hated enemy. In fact, “because the Right will hate it” is a pretty good answer to why the Democrats do anything these days.

The activist Left is highly enamored of Violent Overthrows Of The Establishment (provided they’re is not in power). They hate Western Civ and the free market solely and exclusively because they’re not in charge of them.
Islamists are hell-bent on destroying Western Civ and the free market, but unlike the Western Left, they don’t have public opinion or rules of law & decency to constrain them — they want it; they take it, by any means necessary.
The activist Left regards Islamists as a spectacularly efficient (and exciting!) wrecking ball that’s doing the heavy lifting and dirty work that the activist Left either cannot or will not do.
The Left THRILLS at the prospect of seeing their enemies so cruelly and messily destroyed. They figure that if they “ally” with Muslims now, the scimitar won’t touch their weaselly necks (and for now, it won’t).
I am not sure what they think will happen after Notre Dame is a pile of glass shards and rubble, but the really sociopathic among them will probably “convert” to Islam to share in the power. Others undoubtedly think they will emerge the victors after the dust settles, whereas the average left-of-center boob hasn’t thought about it at all.
Islam is the muscle — whether through actual violence, lawfare, or hoax bombs — that is doing the jobs Western Leftists don’t/won’t do.
OF COURSE they celebrate them.

As someone who comes from a left-wing background, was a leftist until my early 20’s (including working for an ACORN front group), and to this day is surrounded by primarily liberal/progressive family and friends, I think that the thing that most conservatives don’t get about liberal/progressives is that, in general, they are not very bright about politics, history, and economics. That’s not to say that they aren’t extremely knowledgeable and competent in other fields, but politics is for them mainly an area of feeling and sensation, specifically what makes them feel good, triumphant, or as (vicarious) victims. Few of them have any notion of the connection between their beliefs, as in this case, between their condemning even the slightest anti-homosexual actions of Christians and their being indifferent to the most vicious persecution of homosexuals by Muslims. In their minds, Chrisitans occupy the space of “Cruel Fanatic” and Muslims that of “Oppressed Other,” and that’s it, because that’s what makes them feel good, and feeling good, superior, heroic, etc., is what politics is all about for them, unless, of course, it might actually have a personal effect on them. Should that occur, you will be astonished at how reasonable the Leftists in your life become.

If Christianity is true, then the Devil has an active role in human affairs. One idea is that liberalism and Islam tolerate/embrace eachother is because they are both products of Satan. The ultimate goal of both is to turn people away from Christianity so attacking eachother makes little sense. This theory explains the apparent contradiction between liberal attacks on alleged Christian intolerance while remaining silent about far more egregious violations by Muslims.
