America’s First Low-Fertility Commercial?
October 14th, 2015

Courtesy of Galley Friend B.F., this Subaru commercial is (a) the most depressing thing I’ve ever seen on TV; and (b) the first explicitly childfree, low-fertility rate add I’ve seen in the States. Creeptastic.

I dunno about “low-fertility”, but it is certainly pathetic and yeah, kinda creepy.

“Creeptastic”? Isn’t the point of this commercial that the dog is dying and they’re doing a bucket list of activities before he’s put down? Subaru is also a long-standing partner of the ASPCA.

I like dogs but this is the worst.

JVL, I’m with GR here–the dog’s bucket list. I was more concerned that the ad would end with a somber drive to the vet.

Not sure how well this ad sells the Impreza. If it’s just the guy and his pooch, I’m thinking Miata. Or since it’s Subaru, perhaps the BR-Z–no need for more than two doors and two seats.

It’s really only by inference that we can conclude that this guy has no wife or children. Maybe they exist but have less interest in making the old dog happy than his direct master does, so they felt no need to tag along on the journey. It is a gloomy ad, but it has little to do with children.

I am not, repeat not, employing yet another stupid Trump impression: The guy’s a loser who could not even get a woman to settle for him and now lives a life of maximum desperation, to paraphrase Thoreau. Oops, I just referenced Thoreau, pardon me.

The dog hasn’t a clue what’s going on…JFC when his time is short put steak or bacon in with his food like you’re supposed to. What a waste of time, gasoline, and money.

I was about to declare that commercial generally innocuous. Then we saw the guy having breakfast in bed with the dog, and it became just a little too weird for me.
