More on the New DC Universe
June 8th, 2011

In case you thought I was totally out of my mind in ripping the re-booted DCU the other day, today the following was announced: One of the new DC #1 titles will be Hawk & Dove. The book will be drawn by Rob Liefeld.

If you want a series about a bullying fascist and his commie, emo brother fighting crime and wearing lots and lots of pouches, have I got a comic for you!

And I’ll tell you one thing that the re-imagined Hawk & Dove won’t have: feet. I hope Jim Lee didn’t spend a lot of time reconceptualizing their boots.

Some of the most gorgeous fan art I’ve ever seen: Spider-Nam.

Great Moments in Law Enforcement
June 8th, 2011

Police SWAT team breaks down door, at 6:00 a.m., handcuffs man in front of his three small children, and stuff the family into the back of a patrol car for six hours. Why?

Because they were executing a search warrant for the man’s estranged wife. (She was nowhere to be found.) On what grounds? Because the estrange wife defaulted on her student loans. Seriously.

Thanks, Blogosphere
June 8th, 2011

A few years ago I was optimistically apprehensive about Jeffrey Goldberg, one of the great reporters and writers of our day, joining the blogosphere. Optimistic because more Goldberg is better. Nervous because if you spend enough time blogging, eventually always leads to something like this.

I thought I was finished with the Downfall parodies, but this one about the reboot of the DCU is unbelievably fantastic. Worth your 3 minutes.

China. Prison. Warcraft.
June 6th, 2011

Galley Friend. M.C. sends along the story of the week:

Prisoners at a labor camp in northeast China were forced to slay dragons and battle wizards in online games to earn virtual gold that prison guards then sold for real currency, the Guardian newspaper reports.

About 300 prisoners at the Jixi labor camp, located about 18 miles from neighboring Russia, were required to play games such as World of Warcraft and Everquest to earn credits that could be later hawked online to other gamers for cash, former prisoner Liu Dali told the Guardian.

Worst Case Scenario
June 6th, 2011

Galley Friend A.W. sends along this fascinating story in the wake of the near-crash of the L.A. Angels team plane. Says A.W.:

It’s like the pro sports equivalent of shipping Cheney and Wolfowitz out to the bunker in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
