The new Suicide Squad trailer is out:
A couple thoughts:
(1) I can’t tell if this is DC’s Avengers or DC’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
(2) But how much more fun does this look than Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice Blooming of a Franchise? It’s not even close, is it? And is it a problem for Warner Bros. if Suicide Squad out-grosses Batman-Superman by, like, a lot?
(3) I never really liked casting Will Smith as Longshot because the Longshot character was always kind of feral and crazy, not charismatic and sympathetic. But it looks like they’ve just redrawn the character to let Smith be the moral center of the movie and I’m fine with that. Longshot canon isn’t sacred to me and this might be an improvement.
(4) Along those lines, I had kind of wondered what it would have been like in an alt-universe where Will Smith played the Joker. I’d still kind of love to see that.
(5) Prediction: Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is going to steal this movie. WB will rush to get a Harley stand-alone movie out once they see audience reactions. And Robbie will be considered a giant movie star the Monday after the first weekend of release.

Longshot?

One thing that bothered me about this trailer (and Batman vs. Superman) was the color palette of the film — way too dark for my tastes. One thing I really like about Marvel’s films are the bright colors — you can see what the heck is going on and therefore enjoy the action. Even Snyder’s first Superman movie was bright in comparison to the latest trailer.
That said, there is a lot to like in this preview — including the Leto Joker. I also like the Harley Quinn character who I knew nothing about since I’m not a DC guy (and already the feminists are complaining about because of her short shorts and her origin story.)
