One year ago today . . .

That first year John Thompson III took the Hoyas to the Final Four, I started warning Matus that Georgetown was making an enormous institutional gamble by hiring him. Because if it doesn’t work out–if it turns out that Thompson isn’t a very good coach, or even just isn’t a good fit–the university cannot fire him.

And as a rule, big institutions shouldn’t hire people they can’t get rid of. And with John Thompson Jr. still stalking around DC as ex-coach/racial pioneer/public landmark, JTIII is basically tenured. There’s no firing him while the Old Man is still standing.

So, what does Georgetown have in JTIII? The first two years a Sweet Sixteen and a Final Four. Since then:

* Lost in the second round

* Lost in the first round

* Lost in the first round

* Lost in the first round

* Lost in the second round

And in each of these losses, they’ve underperformed their seed. But hey, it’s a young team!
