3 commentsSUPERHERO: In past interviews that I’ve read with you it seems like you are a big fan of the classic versions of the DC/Marvel characters. Do you have any feelings regarding the new DC 52 “Reboot”? Do you have any feelings regarding what’s happening at Marvel these days? What did you think of the Marvel movies that have come out recently?
Ross: For the particulars of what’s gone on in publishing, I’d rather not comment. But I can say that I’ve very much enjoyed Marvel’s momentum with their films. Even if designers like myself are sticklers for certain things we want to see done a certain way, the broader impact of how well these characters’ stories are being handled is very positive and inspiring.
Ramesh on Romney
December 2nd, 2011
In the course of making the strongest case you’re likely to read for Romney, Galley Friend Ramesh Ponnuru writes:
The current surge for Newt Gingrich looks like one last fling before Republicans settle down with Romney.
There’s something deeply funny about picturing the Gingrich candidacy as a drunken, slutted-up one-night stand from a Vegas bachelor party. I’d pay good money to see Gary Locke or Tom Fluharty do a quickie rendering.

Galley Friend B.W. sends along this totally intriguing little essay suggesting that Chris Nolan must kill Bruce Wayne at the end of Dark Knight Rises. It reminds me of the literary alchemy debates whirling around the final Harry Potter book. I’m not sure I’m convinced at the idea that Nolan is making dual trilogies, but I think it’s nearly accepted wisdom that he likes to structure his films like magic tricks. (Sorry, illusions. A trick is something a whore does for money. Or candy.)
The Joseph Gordon-Levitt angle feels completely plausible.

Galley Friend Mike Russell blew me (away) with his first micro-comic collection “The Sabertooth Vampire.” It’s funny, inventive, and features some really impressive, delicate artwork. Half the laughs come from looking at the little fella’s eyes, and Mike manages to pack enormously complicated expressions into what are essentially two circles with dots. It’s awesome.
Now Mike has “The Sabertooth Vampire: The Complete Second Season” up for sale. It’s a steal at $6. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This week the New Yorker carries a review in which the writer begins a paragraph with the following:
“On Twitter, a sitcom observer pointed out that . . .”
So the New Yorker now allows its critics to lean on paraphrases of anonymous Tweets.
Awesome.
